Organ pre-transplantation typing

Human leukocyte antigen(HLA), the major histocompatibility complex(MHC) in humans, serves as a marker to know which cells belong to your body and which do not and has very important biological functions. HLA is encoded by a group of genes on the sixth chromosome and is mainly expressed on the nucleated cell surface, especially on the human leukocyte surface, hence the name human leukocyte antigen. Since HLA reflects the histocompatibility between the transplant recipient and donor, it is closely associated with post-transplantation rejection, hence the name transplantation antigen.

The higher the histocompatibility level between the recipient and donor, the lower the rejection rate and the higher the success rate and long-term survival rate. Conversely, rejection reactions are more likely to occur so the success rate and long-term survival rate are reduced. Therefore, HLA typing between the recipient and donor is essential in clinic for reducing rejection reactions and prolonging transplant functional survival time postoperatively.
